The Significance of Submax Testing and Gender Differences

Submaximal testing is simply testing a subject, athlete, or personal training client at intensities below 100% of VO2max (Volume of Oxygen inspired, expressed in absolute or relative values). When the body is taxed during cardiorespiratory fitness, oxygen demands increase. Oxygen consumption increases as intensity increases. This can be easily demonstrated in submax testing because of steady-state that heart rate (HR) reaches during this type of test. However, the body can only consume a certain amount of oxygen proportional to body mass. This peak value is capped by biochemical metabolism and is influenced by age, gender, body size, muscle type, and genetics and is termed VO2 max. Females have a higher fat mass: fat-free mass than males. This ratio is normally higher because of the innate physiological differences between genders. All of these factors cause larger VO2max values in men than women. Since most of these differences between males and females are only significant on an absolute level, the main factor for the difference in relative VO2 levels must be the decreased ratio of fat mass: fat free mass. Fat-free mass implies more lean mass (fat-free mass) which is the tissue which utilizes oxygen during exercise.
